Periyar lake is inside the Periyar tiger reserve which is a protected area in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta in Kerala. It is a popular tourist destination. Periyar Lake is 1½-hour boat trips around the lake are the main way to tour the sanctuary without taking a guided walk. You might see deer, boar and birdlife but it’s generally more of a cruise – often a rowdy one – than a wildlife-spotting experience. Boats are operated by the forest department and by KTDC – the ticket counters are together in the main building above the boat jetty, and you must buy a ticket before boarding the boat. In high season get to the ticket office 1½ hours before each trip to buy tickets in Periyar Lake . The first and last departures offer the best prospects for wildlife spotting, and October to March are generally the best time to see animals in near to Periyar Lake.

Lake Palace – be part of a royal legacy

i) 7.30 a.m. ii) 9.30 a..m. iii) 11.15 a.m. iv) 1.45 p.m. v) 3.30 p.m.
Boat Ride Timings and Booking Procedure
There are 3 ways of booking tickets for the boating – Periyar Lake.
a) “On Line” – Perhaps the easiest method of booking in Periyar Lake. Details of booking tickets is enumerated in their web site
b) If you check in, as a tourist in any ONE of the TWO KTDC hotels in Thekkady, then a tie up exists between the Hotel and the Boating crew, and if you inform the Hotel of your date and choice of timings, then, they will organise the tickets for you.
c) By standing in the “Q”, at the boat starting point. Procedure is cumbersome, as firstly, for every 2 passengers 1 passenger has to stand in the Q to get tickets ( Example if there are 10 passengers in your group 5 of them will have to stand in the Q). Be ready to have a pen and Id details ready, as you will have to fill up forms, before the boat crew issues the tickets.

Shopping in Thekkady
An eco shop near the entrance gate of Periyar Tiger Reserve, offers souvenirs, T-shirts, post cards, wildlife books, etc. for sale. There are no big bazaars as such in Thekkady – Periyar Lake, but one can find a few colorful stalls to buy knick-knacks. Tourists will find good quality spices like fenugreek, white and green pepper, rolls of cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, star anise, coriander, cloves, etc. One can also enjoy munching on the traditional banana chips that are fried in fresh coconut oil.
