Lake Pichola  is one of the most beautiful and picturesque lakes of Rajasthan, India. Located in the heart of the city, Lake Pichola  is the oldest and one of the largest lakes of Udaipur. In 1362, the beautiful lake was built by Pichhu Banjara during the ruling period of Maharana Lakha Talking about the dimensions of Pichhola Lake; it is extended to 3 miles in length, 2 miles in width and has depth of 30 feet.

The lakePichola looks more enchanting with its scenic surroundings. Maharana Udai Singh must have been certainly captivated by the charm of this pristine lake with the perfect backdrop of lush green hills as when he founded the city of Udaipur, he enlarged this lake. He also constructed a dam made in stone that falls under the ‘Badipol’ region on the shore of this lake.

Lake Pichola  is enveloped by lofty Palaces, temples, bathing ghats and elevated hills on all its sides. In the southern part of this lake Pichola, there is a hill that is known as Machhala Magra and one can see glimpse of Eklinggarh Fort from here. The City Palace of Udaipur broadens along the eastern banks of this lake. The pristine blue waters of the lake leave a soothing impact on the spectator.

Attractions around Lake Pichola

Lake Palace: The Lake Palace is a white beautiful palace, situated in the mid of the Lake Pichola. The palace was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh as his summer home. The scene of Lake Palace amidst Lake Pichola is mesmerizing.

Jagmandir Palace: It is intented to be a pleasure palace for regal parties and functions. It also served as a refuge for Mughal emperor Shah Jehan when he was a prince. The legend says that Jagmandir was the inspiration behind the world-famous Taj Mahal.

Boat-rides: The lake Pichola can be explored on a boat ride. A boat ride will cover all the major and minor attractions around the lake. Also the lake is so beautiful that one can enjoy the rides on a boat.

Gulab Bagh: Gulab Bagh (Rose Garden) or Sajjan Niwas Garden is the largest garden in Rajasthan, on the banks of Lake Pichola at Lake Palace Road.  The lovely rose garden is sprawled across 100 acres of land. Look out for its variety of roses, and the arrangement of flower beds. This peaceful garden is a virtual forest of flowers with unusual rose beds, palm trees, orchids and acres of lush lawns.

Rope Way: It is one of the most important tourist attractions. It is installed between two mountains right on the bank of Lake Pichola. The view from the Gondolas is breath taking and if you have passion for photography you must not miss this. It is from here that you can click best view of Udaipur including Lake Pichola, Lake Fateh Sagar, magnificent City Palace complex, Sajjangarh Fort and above all artistic landscaped Aravali mountains on the other side of the lake.

Sukhadia Circle: Sukhadia Circle’s centerpiece is a huge, graceful three-tiered fountain of scalloped dishes surmounted by a wheatear motif (symbol of prosperity). Around the fountain is a circular lake, beyond which are pleasant gardens.

How to Reach Udaipur

Air : Indian Airlines daily connects Udaipur with Jodhpur, Jaipur, Aurangabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Dabok Airport is 21 Km. from the city centre.

Rail: The Railway Station is about 3 Km. from the city centre. Udaipur is directly connected by rail with Delhi, Jaipur, Ajmer, Chittaur, Jodhpur and Ahmedabad.

Road: Udaipur is connected by National Highway No. 8, the major road link between Mumbai and Delhi. The Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Road Transport Corporation operate buses to Udaipur from various regions.

Reaching Lake Pichola

The lake is located only 3 km away from the bus station and railway station and 21 km from the airport. One could reach the lake by getting auto-rickshaws, Tongas, taxis or by local buses.
