Ghent festival 2014 in Belgium

Since 1957 Ghent Flanders Festival  has attracted many thousands of visitors each year — the ghent Festival has become the talk of the music scene with events like “Avanti!” (a musical cycling tour), its Venetian ball, “KidsOdeGand” and “OdeGand” (the grand opening event). The festival’s success is in great part due to its unique mix of diversity and creativity. Each year, over 180 concerts (classical and world music) are presented by more than 1500 (inter)national artists. Ghent Flanders Festival is different in that it is only content if it can present the very best.

Ghent becomes a music-lover’s Mecca. Hundreds of performers provide a varied mixture of classical, jazz and world music. It opens with the festive OdeGand. The streets alongside Ghent’s waterways overflow with music, animation, art and spectacle. And to top it off: a sparkling firework display.

Ghent Events & Festivals

last

The “Ghentse Feesten” (the “Ghent Festival”) is the biggest and most popular cultural festival in Europe. Every year, about 1.5 million people visit the festival!
During the ten days of this multicultural happening, you can enjoy music, theatre, puppet players, street artists, etc. Nearly all street shows and open-air concerts are free.

Ghent is rich in cultural and arts festivals year round. Music, sports, film attract locals and travelers to enjoy events in the magnificent setting of the city.

In May, don’t miss the Quadrennial of Contemporary Art. Organized by S.M.A.K. the Museum of Contemporary Art, it is forum of discussion of the latest tendencies in contemporary art.

Amazing Cathedral LEDs Rises at Belgium’s Festival of Lights

cch

The eye-catching structure will be a stand out out in the town and is the work of Luminarie De Cagna, an Italian family business. During local festive occassions, the company would light up buildings with oil and carbide lamps, but most likely due to the high fire risk, this was soon switched to electric lights. Today, only LEDs are used for set pieces and they are joined together to make massive curtains of light that can be draped over buildings. This allows whole sections of the town to be lit up.

The LED Cathedral was designed with Romanesque and Renaissance architecture in mind and at its zenith, it stands an impressive 28m high. Unsurprisingly, the cathedral has already been drawing large crowds to Belfortstraat like moths to a flame. You also need not worry about the amount of energy being used, as despite being made from 55,000 LEDs, it only consumes 20Kwh of electricity. If you live in the region and are thinking of attending, then you’ll be happy to hear that the light festival’s theme is ‘Happiness’, which is not a coincidence since 2012 is the Maeterlinck Year in Ghent Festival.
