Thekkady is located about 250 km from Trivandrum, 190 km from Cochin International Airport , 120 km from Kottayam railway station and 114 km from Madurai City and Madurai Airport, Thekkady is located near to Kerala-Tamil Nadu border. The sanctuary is famous for its dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savanna grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers, gaur, lion-tailed Macaques and Nilgiri Langurs.

There is food stall and moderate toilet facility near the ticketing centre Periyar Lake is near Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s a big lake and good for boating. 2. Enjoy a day out at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 777 squre Kms, of which 360 Squre kms is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come down to drink in the lake. Sanctuary can be accessed through a trekking, boating or jeep safari.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded by the Cardamom Hills, with the highest peak being that of Kottamalai at 2019 meters. The varying altitudes of the sanctuary give it different temperature conditions, which results in different types of vegetation. The temperature during the summer months could be between 15-20° Celsius, depending on the altitude. Apart from being an Eco tourism destination, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady as it is often called, also attracts a lot of pilgrims every year who come here to visit the Sabarimala Temple. The temple receives more than 3 million pilgrims every year.

5. Walking in the Clouds at Ramakalmedu
Located 28km from Thekkady is Ramakkalmedu which gives you a birds-eye view of the Western Ghats and the plains in Tamil Nadu. Also located 16 km from Nedumkandom is the silent town of Ramakalmedu. Located alongside the Thekkady Munnar road, Ramakalmedu lies in the mountain region on the border of Tamil Nadu. The attractions located near to the region of Ramakalmedu include Turtle rock, Frog rock and twin statue by the name of Kuravan and Kurathi.
Ram is the name of Hindu God and he is the re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Kal is a Malayalam is the word for rock and Medu means land with hills and rocks. The locals believes that Lord Ram was in this place when he was searching his wife Sita who was abducted by Ravan the king of Lanka as illustrated in Ramayan. Lord Ram had set his foot on the tallest rock to search Sita and the rock was named as RAMAKKAL and the place was later named as Ramakkalmedu.
Still unknown to many, as many tourists visit this place during daylight hours and depart without enjoying the night beauty. Several cities can be viewed from the mountain at night and it is fabulous view indeed. Top station remains a virgin spot, hardly visited by tourists.
When you are at the top the hill, you can feel the force with which the wind blew. The adventurous can quench their quest for thrills on some rather dangerous looking rocks for climbing. The view from the top during a clear sky gives you a feeling that you are actually looking out an airplane window. The clouds feel so near that you yearn to reach out and touch them, literally giving you a feeling of walking with the clouds. Despite it being a typically sunny day, one didnt feel the heat thanks to the winds which kept us cool.
6. Enjoy the Waterfalls of Chellarkovil, Thekkady(Periyar)
Chellarkovil is located about 15 km from Kumily en route to the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. This place has a lot of picturesque waterfalls and cascades. The small village of Chellarkovil is popular for its waterfalls, green plains and Cumbum coconut grooves.
Chellarkovil is located in Kerala Tamil Nadu border. Its a hill top with motor able road. There is a great aerial view of Tamil Nadu from hill top. The right time is during sunrise/ sunset. There is a watch tower with telescope facility with a balcony name “God’s Own Balcony”. The view mountain and serene landscape from top is really great.
Chellarkovil is famous for amazing place for beautiful views and gusing waterfalls. You can watch so many coconut groves at this place. You can also visit Ayurveda gardens and also do trekking. Best season is to visit is on June and July. This is a must-visit place for every nature lover. There are several small mountain brooks in this place and the overall natural beauty is enticing. It is very near to Cumbum, which is famous for lush coconut groves. Tourists can enjoy the view of those beautiful imposing coconut groves from here.
7. Go back on History at Kadathanadan Kalari Centre, Thekkady(Periyar)
The oldest form of martial arts is practised in its original form even after all these years. The muddy floor, the dim lights and the dhols playing in the background as the commentator explains each act perfectly complement the artists who are the epitome of physical fitness, athleticism and flexibility. They jump through rings of fire, they use all sorts of hand held weapons like daggers, knives, swords, flagpoles and spears. The one hour show is well worth the Rs. 200/- spent for the ticket . It happens twice every day, one at 6 pm and one around 7:30.

Experience Bamboo Rafting during guided tour through Periyar Wild Life Sanctuary . Thekkady is one of the best places in India to do bamboo rafting . The concept of bamboo raft tourism in Thekkady owes its existence to these simple rafts built and used by the tribals in the sanctuary.
The scenery during this trekking and rafting tour is really exhilirating and amorous, and the best point to enjoy this is enjoy it from than the languidly floating bamboo raft when you are floating in the water and rafts are partially submerged in the water, making for a tactile encounter with the lake.
This is a combined trekking and rafting tour and trekking involves a four kilometer walk to the point of bamboo rafts boarding. Rafting point from which rafting starts after the 4 kilometer trek. Bamboo rafting is an amazing and fresh experience. The fact that we’re sitting at water level makes for a more intimate encounter with the water in the lake. In fact, the middle of the raft lies so low in the water, a puddle forms there and sometime the middle of the raft is below water with guests sitting on both side.

To reach Thekkady the nearest airport is at Madurai in Tamil Nadu, which is located at a distance of around 136 km away from Thekkady. The nearest international airport is Nedumbassery airport in Kochi, which is at a distance of about 190 km away.
Thekkady has the nearest railstation at Kottayam at a distance of about 114 km. All the express trains that go to Trivandrum, passes through Kottayam as well. There is KSRTC public transport buses connecting Thekkady with nearby cities, along with super fast buses regularly available from Kochi, Kottayam and Trivandrum to Thekkady.
